Recently, a magazine asked me to offer advice on recreating an area of my home, on a budget. I laughed, because most of the accessories in my home are already pretty budget-friendly. Great style never has to be expensive! Here, my tips for making the most of your home decorating budget:
1. Spend where it counts: I spend the most money on high-quality furniture and great rugs. They take a lot of abuse and really need to be well-made. Accessories, on the other hand, can be budget buys, especially when you are as fickle and trend-loving as I am. Sure, I have items picked up from exotic vacations, antiques, and some other splurges, but I also have plenty of stuff from Target, Home Goods, and TJ Maxx. I buy what I like, period.
2. Flash sales, yet again: All of the big sites have some home sales, but OneKingsLane.com is dedicated exclusively to amazing items for the home.
3. Add some luxury to everyday living: Check out sales for great prices on the best towels and sheets you can afford. They really make life more luxurious. This isn’t exactly a moneysaving tip, but it always amazes me how some people save the “good” stuff only for guests or special occasions. Bring out that fine china and use it!
4. Create magic with textiles: Interesting, vintage, or exotic textiles can add personality and color to a room, without spending a lot of money. Pick up great textiles wherever you see them, and use them as throws, to cover decorative pillows, or to create one-of-a-kind window treatments.
5. Know a Good Designer: My superstylish friend Michele McCarthy has kept me from making many expensive decorating mistakes, so if you are uncertain whether to splurge on that one-of-a-kind settee, check with a decorator. They have access to trade-only merchandise, and can often help steer you in the right direction!
