Last night, at the same dinner with my girlfriends where the topic of jeggings came up, we started to talk about jeans in general. One of the group, the same stylish girl who just bought those black jeggings, swore that she bought skinny jeans without trying them on, and they fit perfectly. She didn’t produce any evidence to back her claim, but she called it a miracle, which, indeed, it is. Another friend complained that, by the end of the day, her jeans had stretched out so much that they were literally falling off, and the friend next to her had the exact same problem. Another friend mentioned that it was hard to find jeans that fit her, because her waist is tiny, but she actually has hips. (In other words, the perfect hourglass figure). I know that a lot of women share these same issues, so I decided to address them here!
First, let me start by saying that, contrary to what you’ve thought your entire life, spandex is your friend! And it’s the quick answer to many denim problems, including the two above. A little bit of stretch helps jeans to fit, flatter, and feel more comfortable. They offer support and even hide imperfections. A small percentage of spandex (anywhere from 2 to 5%) may not even be noticeable in terms of the way it looks, depending on the cut of the jean, but it makes a huge difference in the way it fits and feels!
Problem: Jeans that Fall Off By the End of the Day
Solution: Buy jeans with more stretch! (See note above). Stretch, in the form of spandex or elastane (Lycra is a brand of spandex) allows jeans to give and bounce back to shape, which prevents them from stretching out so much that they fall off of you!
The Specifics: Lucky Brand Classic Rider Jeans, $99, which offer a fabulous, flattering fit for curvy shapes, and 2% Lycra for comfort and support. And right now, Lucky is offering $25 off your order of $100 or more!
Problem: Small waist with curvy hips
Solution: Look for jeans with a tapered waist. Many of the better denim brands offer this option right now. Also, make sure you fit the largest part of your body, and then realize that you may have to alter your jeans to make them perfect. For example, if jeans fit your hips and thighs beautifully, you can have the waist taken in and the length taken up so that you’ve created your perfect pair of jeans.
The Specifics: Express Boot Cut Eva Jean, $69.90, which are designed to fit around a woman’s curves, so they nip in at the waist and still fit nicely over the hips. And now through Monday, get $15 off a $60 order on express.com. Also an option: Joe’s Honey Jean.
