There are a lot of little men in my life! Over the past year, seven of my girlfriends have had baby boys, which means lots of first-birthday parties coming up! I love to buy gifts that are hip and unusual, and try to steer clear of ugly plastic crap! Fortunately, I’ve found a few fabulous gifts guaranteed to make mommy and baby happy. Here are my current faves:
1. Rubbabu animals-on-wheels, $12 each: I spotted these at Galt Toys in Chicago and immediately feel in love. These adorable plush animals covered in flocked velvet roll along on cushy, rubber tires. They’re fast, fun, and safe for little ones.

2. Manny & Simon rolling animals, $32 each: To continue the animal on wheels theme, these fun wooden toys come in modern graphic shapes and glossy bold colors rendered in zero VOC paint. I would collect the whole menagerie to decorate one lucky little boy’s room! link
3. Plan Toys, about $32: When a new walker pushes this adorable, eco-friendly duck, it’s felt feet make a realistic flapping sound. Sooo cute! link
4. Haba Sticky Blocks, $32: It’s no secret that I am a fan of Haba’s colorful, German-made toys, and this small set of starter blocks. These wooden blocks have pegs that hold them together, making block-building a less frustrating experience for little kids. link
5. Melissa & Doug Band in a Box, $20: A friend gave this to Lola for her first birthday, and it has been one of the most popular toys in her overcrowded playroom. From the littlest kids to elementary age, little ones just love making music with these colorful instruments.link
